Dental Evolution: How Veneers Became What They Are Today

Dentist picking up a veneer

Dental veneers have become a sought-after treatment for many people. They offer a dramatic transformation into a gorgeous smile that patients love. In fact, over eight million of them are placed every year. Before they became this desired cosmetic service, they had to evolve over the years. Here’s how they started and what it took for them to become what they are today.

Shining Bright on Silver Screens

In 1928, Dr. Charles Pincus formally invented veneers. He was based in Los Angeles and had several Hollywood stars as clients. During their appointments, he noticed they were becoming self-conscious about how their smiles looked during filming. Dr. Pincus wanted to offer a solution to their concerns, so he thought of this cosmetic treatment.

The first set of these shells were made from porcelain and powdered plastic. They would snap onto teeth, but they weren’t long-lasting. In fact. They were removed after just a few days or after the actors and actresses finished shooting.

Innovative Dental Techniques

Fast forward to the 1950s, Dr. Michael Bunocore made a leap for restorative dentistry. He created a process known as etching, which is where the surface of a tooth is roughened to open the natural pores. This allowed the bonding material used in dental prosthetics to form a stronger hold, meaning they lasted much longer. This idea was then used for veneers in 1982, so they had a better lifespan than before.

Modern Veneers to the Rescue

Veneers today are made from high-quality materials, typically porcelain. They are color-matched and shaped for every patient, so they are fully customized to you. They will blend in seamlessly into your smile and can last up to 15 years or longer with proper care.

While it might’ve taken a bit of time for this cosmetic treatment to become what it is now, it’s well worth it for many people. The process is just two appointments that are two weeks apart. The advanced instruments and technology have also made them more accessible and affordable. That way, not just those in Hollywood get this service anymore; anyone can!
