Your Child's First Dental Visit
Your child's first visit to our Bowie family dental office should be around the age of two. By this time, all of the primary teeth, also referred to as baby teeth, have erupted and will give us a good idea of your child’s oral development. At this first visit, one of our caring team members will show your little one around the dental office and explain the sights and sounds they might encounter. This helps our youngest patients become familiar with the dental office environment and be comfortable around the doctor, hygienists, and dental assistants.
Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
Dr. Hightower will provide your child with a comprehensive examination of their teeth, gums, and bite, then she’ll talk with you about her findings. If she spots signs of decay, another appointment will be scheduled for your child’s treatment. It’s important that you maintain children’s dentistry checkups every six months. This allows us to identify problems early and treat them quickly when procedures seem a lot less scary to little ones. In addition, our team will show your child proper brushing and flossing techniques. Kids will need help from Mom and Dad with home care until they are around 6-7 years of age.
Dental Sealants
We want children’s dentistry visits to be a good experience for every child. We offer additional preventive measures for kids in an effort to help them avoid those dreaded cavities. Dental sealants are thin layers of plastic that cover the deep grooves in the molars, preventing food and bacteria from becoming stuck and causing decay. Since brushing habits often leave something to be desired when a patient is still young, dental sealants are a great measure of children’s dentistry for healthier teeth.
